Cane River National Heritage Area Competitive Grants Program released guidelines and applications for its 2008 funding cycle Friday, February 15th. The National Heritage Area is in its tenth grants cycle and has awarded over one million dollars for local heritage projects since 1999.

A primary goal of the Commission is to build partnerships with residents and developers that encourage heritage development which in turn honors the area’s rich traditions and history.

Subject to program monies preservation, landscape conservation, research and development projects are slated for funding.

The 2008 funding priority is landscape conservation which will fund projects that assist in the conservation of cultural landscapes adjacent to nationally significant historic properties located in the national heritage area.

Generally, a cultural landscape is a geographic area that includes cultural and natural resources associated with an historic event, activity, person, or group of people. The current scheme of structures, natural landscapes, and waterways in the Cane River area tells the story of the land and people from centuries ago to current times.

Other funding opportunities include:

Preservation funding will be awarded to projects that assist in the preservation, stabilization, and/or restoration of historic properties at least 50 years old that are listed on or eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places. All projects must follow the Secretary of Interior’s Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties www.cr.nps.gov/linklaws.htm.

Research funding will be awarded to projects that assist in the discovery and documentation of history and culture in the Cane River region. Areas of interest include archaeology, ethnography, history, linguistics, architectural history and other related disciplines.

Development funding will be awarded to projects that fund creative, culturally sensitive and educational endeavors that enhance the experience and environment of the Cane River region for residents and visitors.

A cash and/or in-kind match are required for all projects. Proposal deadline is Tuesday April 15th by 5:00 p.m. (CST). Guidelines and applications may be downloaded from the National heritage Areas official website at www.caneriverheritage.org within the grants section sent via email.
