SWCA Environmental Consultants Celebrates 30th Anniversary

Founded in Flagstaff, Arizona, in 1981 by Steven W. Carothers, SWCA Environmental Consultants is celebrating 30 years of professional service.

SWCA Environmental Consultants is proud to celebrate 30 years of professional service to clients and communities across the nation.

Steven W. Carothers founded the business in Flagstaff, Arizona, in 1981 based on the simple principle of using science and creativity to address challenging environmental and regulatory problems. He started with a focus on natural resources and in 1988 the firm added cultural resources consulting to its portfolio. SWCA expanded geographically throughout the 1990s and 2000s by opening offices in other states and acquiring several aligned companies.

“In the very early days of SWCA, I recognized a need for the kind of environmental consulting work we’re doing for private and public-sector clients,” said Carothers, who serves on the company’s board of directors and continues to work with clients nationwide as a senior scientist. “And with all the environmental challenges our world continues to face today, I believe there is even more need for what SWCA provides and opportunities for SWCA’s growth as we look ahead to the next 30 years.”

Today, SWCA provides an array of environmental services including planning, natural and cultural resource management, permitting, regulatory compliance, and sustainability and climate change consulting. A growing team of professionals applies scientific expertise and in-depth knowledge of permitting and compliance protocols toward projects throughout the United States and its territories.

The company is 100% employee-owned, with more than 700 full- and part-time staff members based in 23 offices. In 2010 SWCA had more than $62 million in revenues, and the company is ranked #111 on Engineering News-Record’s Top 200 Environmental Firms for 2011.

“We have come a long way from our simple beginnings,” added John Thomas, president and CEO. “Even though we have grown tremendously since Steve started the firm in 1981, we still pursue the mission and goals that he embarked upon — providing sound science and creative solutions to our clients.”
