Description
The
aim of the Red Church Educational Workcamp is to prepare the site of
the
Perushtitsa Red Church for the advancement of a conservation and
preservation project.
After clearing and cleaning the site of the church, participants in the
project will be able to proceed with the drawing of a detailed
architectural
plan of the remains of the monument. Activities at the site of the Red
Church will be enhanced by lectures on early Christian architecture in
the Balkans, early Christian monumental art and graphical documentation
of
architectural remains. By participating in the Educational Workcamp you
will be helping with the acquisitions of new knowledge about early
Christian architecture in the Eastern Roman Empire, as well as helping
us preserve an important part of the world’s cultural heritage.
The Red Church is considered an excellent example of Early Christian
architecture. Experts in Ancient and Byzantine art and architecture are
impressed by the beauty of its frescoes and the church's innovative for
its time architectural concept. Sadly, only a part of the original
complex is still relatively well preserved, and despite the local
community’s efforts to preserve this unique monument, the Red Church is
slowly turning into ruins.
The Red Church Educational Workcamp project will take place under the
guidance and assistance of professionals and experts from
Archeologistica and from the Perushtica Museum of History, who will be
available at all times to answer any of the participants' questions.
