Ivan Marinov (Archeologistica); Anton Karabashev (History Museum of Pomorie)
Description
The Ancient Pottery and Glass Restoration and Drawing Project in Ancient Anchialos (modern city of Pomorie, on the Black Sea coast) is composed of intensive lectures and workshops on the methods and particular techniques applied in the restoration and conservation of ancient pottery and glass. While the intensive workshops offer the participants a unique opportunity of a hands-on experience of the restoration of actual ancient pottery and glass vessels under the guidance and supervision of professionals working in the field, the theoretical and technical lectures will introduce the participant to the history of ceramic and glass vessels production and to their treatment in an archaeological context (theoretical and physical analysis, restoration and preservation).
Completing the project successfully, the participant will have acquired intermediate skills in ceramic and glass vessel restoration and graphic documentation. The theoretical and technical lectures will have given the participant a deeper understanding of the methods and principles of restoration, conservation and documentation of artifacts, as well as a basic knowledge of the types of pottery from the Archaic and Classical eras characteristic to the Greek colonies on the western shores of the Black Sea, and most specifically to the region of Anchialos.
The project consists of 14 intensive workshop sessions complemented by 6 technical lectures and by 7 theoretical lectures covering the subject of the analysis, restoration and conservation of pottery and glass vessels. The theoretical lectures will introduce the participant to the history of the region of Ancient Anchialos (the Greek colonies of the western Pontus), to the history and techniques of the production of ancient ceramic and glass vessels, to the methods employed in the classification of ceramic and glass vessels in archaeology, to the local types of pottery, dating mainly from the Roman Imperial era, and to the introduction of new technology in the reconstitution and restoration of ceramic and glass vessels.
