Description  

The Penn State Department of Anthropology will offer an archaeological field school that will search for Fort Shirley, an important Colonial-era fort erected in 1755. Historical documentary research and a geophysical survey have narrowed the location of this important frontier stockade. Associated with this fort are George Croghan’s homestead and trading post (established 1753) and Aughwick Old Town, which grew around the post. Archaeologist Dr. Jonathan Burns of AXIS Research, Inc. will lead the first professional excavation of Fort Shirley in Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania.
