Description
The goal of the Ancient Anchialos Field School is to familiarize the participants with the techniques of archaeological excavation in a context abounding with material from many ancient cultures – Thracian, Greek, Roman, Byzantine –, as well as to initiate them in the history and archaeology of the Ancient Greek colonies of the western Black Sea. By joining the Field School, participants will play an active role in the accumulation of new archaeological data.
Each of the Ancient Anchialos Archaeological Field School sessions consists of 10 intensive sessions of archaeological excavation accompanied by 7 theoretical lectures, two workshops (technical, or practical, lectures)and two excursions. Each of the 10 sessions of excavating will be accompanied by an onsite introduction to the techniques of archaeological excavation (onsite training might be more intensive during the first few excavation sessions, see Program) and personalized training by professional archaeologists. Attention will be placed on the many aspects and details necessary for the completion of a safe, productive and exciting field school. The theoretical lectures will complete the knowledge accumulated day by day by the participants in the project with additional information on the history and archaeology of the region. Two special, technical lectures or workshops will be dedicated to an introduction to the techniques of archaeological illustration. One of these lectures will introduce participants in the project to the drawing of archaeological artifacts. Another lecture will familiarize participants with the techniques of architectural remains documentation in archaeology.
Participants will be working at all times under the guidance and the supervision of professionals from Bulgarian Institute of Archaeology, Pomorie Museum of History and from Archeologistica.
Participation fee: 1099 EUR (discount available)
