This summer we will continue our work at the Carson Mound Group (located in northwestern Mississippi), one of the largest prehistoric ceremonial centers in the Mississippi alluvial valley. The 1894 Cyrus Thomas map shows more than 80 mounds at the site, although only the largest remain today. Our continuing research goals include relocation of destroyed mounds, better understanding the very complex site structure, and evaluating the nature of flood deposits that cover much of the site.
Methods
Students will become familiar with the tools of archaeology, from trowels to gradiometers. There will be a strong emphasis on cutting-edge geospatial instruments, which we have successfully employed at a number of other sites in the region. Students will be exposed to a number of field survey techniques including magnetic gradiometry, electrical resistivity, conductivity, surface and downhole magnetic susceptibility, ground penetrating radar, aerial photography, total station, differential GPS, and GIS.
Enrollment
Total enrollment will be limited to 12 students, filled on a first come basis.
Accommodations
The field school will be housed near Clarksdale, one of the larger towns in the Delta and the birthplace of the blues. There are a number of restaurants and blues clubs where students will have the opportunity explore the modern culture of the area after their day in the field.
Schedule
The field school will begin on July1 and conclude on July 30.
Tuition
Undergraduates will sign up for Anthropology 335 for six hours of credit. Graduate students will sign up for six hours of Anthropology 635. Course fees will be $1,195 for undergraduates and $1,695 for graduate students.
Application
In addition to regular registration, applicants will need to email or mail a one-page statement of interest to Jay K. Johnson, Department of Sociology and Anthropology, University of Mississippi, University, MS 38677 (sajay@olemiss.edu). If you have any questions, please call (662-915-7339) or email Professor Johnson.
