Description

The program gives everybody the opportunity to participate in a archaeology fieldwork organized by the local Archaeology museum in Sandanski, southwestern Bulgaria for further research on an Early Christian Basilica found in the center of the present-day town. The program sessions take place in the summer, starting in the beginning of June and ending in August. Sessions duration is two weeks, however those who think two-weeks time is not enough, they can apply individually for extra time. The work requires no previous experience and will be conducted by a professional archaeologist. The site is situated in the very center of the nice town of Sandanski and the hotel where all participants will be accommodated is in two minutes walking distance. A day-trip to the ancient town of Philippi, Greece will be organized in the weekend. Working hours will begin early in the morning at 6:30 – 7:00 and will end at 12:00 as the climate in summer is very hot in Sandanski. Afternoons will be scheduled for various activities, such as mosaic production courses and lectures. The idea is to create mosaics, similar to those found on the floors of the basilica and of course, to simulate the same working techniques. At the end of each session participants will receive a fieldwork certificate issued by the Regional Museum of Sandanski. The program cost for 2 weeks is 699 Euro ~ 1000 USD including housing with breakfast all 14 days, all transportation within Bulgaria and Greece, administrative cost and all entrance fees.

Costs / Living Conditions
Room and Board arrangements Two overnights in Sofia and 12 in Sandanski in nice 3 star hotels, breakfast included. Lunch and dinner are not included in the program price. We assume that it is quite easier for participants to choose among many different restaurants in the town of Sandanski, as the fieldwork takes place in the very center of the town. In our opinion it wouldn't be fair to give them any regulation about what and where they eat. The total sum needed for food for 2 weeks will be around 100-120 Euro.
Cost 699 Euro for 2 weeks
