The Environmental Management Participation Program for the U.S. Army Environmental Command (USAEC) provides opportunities to participate in USAEC on-going applied research and development projects, and environmental technology demonstration projects at Army installations worldwide. Project areas include Environmental Compliance and Planning, Cultural Resources, Natural Resources, Range Management, and Geographical Information Systems.
Five appointments are available at Ft. McCoy, Wisconsin, with the Cultural Resources Team. The participants will assist with traditional archaeological field surveys, excavation procedures, and basic artifact identification analysis.
The appointment includes, but is not limited to the following:
• Conducting archaeological investigations to identify prehistoric and historic archaeological sites within the boundaries of the Fort McCoy military reservation;
• Preparing artifacts for curation, and conducting preliminary laboratory analysis of collected artifacts (cleaning, sorting, cataloging, etc;
• Completing, and compiling analysis for the archaeological field report. Record field data of all archaeological fieldwork, including GPS data;
• Attend weekly status update meetings to discuss progress of archaeological field survey work and to receive further guidance and updated project information.
Applicants should have received a bachelor's degree in Archaeolgy, Geology, Anthropology and History or related discipline within three years of the desired starting date, or completion of all requirements for the degree should be expected on or about the starting date. Applicants should have completed a formal archaeological field school at an accredited college, university or similar program. Experience working with fieldwork in the upper Midwest region, and on military installations with Cultural Resource Management Teams is highly desirable. Other applicants will be considered on a case-by-case basis. The program is open to all qualified U.S. citizens without regard to race, sex, religion, color, age, physical or mental disability, national origin, or status as a Vietnam era or disabled veteran.
The participants will be selected based on academic records, recommendations, applied research interests, and compatibility of background with applied research programs and projects at Ft. McCoy and/or the host Installation.
The initial appointment is for Five Months and may be renewed for up to a total of three years based upon recommendation of USAEC and subject to availability of funds. The appointment is full time at Ft. McCoy Wisconsin.
The participant will receive a monthly stipend. The stipend rate is determined based upon level of education, training, and experience. Inbound travel and moving expenses are reimbursed according to established policies. Travel and other costs will also be reimbursed for training related to the project and approved by ORISE and the host installation.
The participant must show proof of health and medical insurance. Health plans are available through the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education for Postgraduate Internship participants. The appointment is full time at the host installation.

What Lies Beneath? Native American Tribes of the Boise, Idaho Archaeological Record And a Site in the Boise Foothills Tests have confirmed the dates and the fact that the artifacts, found in the Boise foothills near the Table Rock plateau, came from the same source of obsidian as the Squaw/Timber Butte location, east of Payette and North from Boise. This Squaw/Timber Butte location is known as a major prehistoric source of obsidian glass in eastern Idaho prehistory. ( A re-cap of the original report and research below.)
