SWCA Environmental Consultants is a growing employee-owned consulting firm specializing in environmental regulatory compliance, natural resource management, cultural resource management and related research. We are actively seeking to fill a Field Director position within our Cultural Resources Program for the Bismarck, North Dakota office. This position will include travel and support of our Billings, Montana, and Sheridan, Wyoming locations. The potential for permanent transfer to these other locations may be possible if the successful candidate is interested. These positions are full-time hourly and the candidate will typically work up to 40 hours per week or more depending on workload. Overtime is possible. Pay rate will be based on individual qualifications and experience.
This position is a mid-level position in which the primary job responsibility will be conducting survey and monitoring projects, supervising crews on testing and data recovery efforts, and some report preparation, under the direction of cultural resource project managers. Candidates must be able to demonstrate at least two years field experience in managing in-house support staff, sub-consultants, and temporary field employees, including multiple field teams.
Responsibilities:
* Supervision of field crews conducting archaeological fieldwork including survey, monitoring, testing and data recovery;
* Participation in technical research and report writing as needed;
* Contribution to and demonstrated ability to lead team efforts during cultural resources field and lab work;
* Taking initiative, resolving problems, and creating improved procedures to assure tasks are completed in the most effective manner;
* Organization and tracking of all field records, and data (a solid background in GIS/GPS Trimble protocol and ArcPad would be ideal);
* Communication with Project Managers and GPS/GIS staff through regular, scheduled Project/Field status reports.
Qualifications:
Knowledge and experience with the inventory and evaluation of prehistoric and historic archaeological resources in North Dakota and South Dakota is required. Additional experience in Montana, Wyoming, Minnesota, and Iowa would be beneficial for the position. A Bachelor’s Degree in anthropology, archaeology, or a closely related field is required, and a Masters Degree a plus. Ability to use GPS/Arc Pad for data collection, as well as general knowledge of computer hardware, software, and other related information technologies is preferred. Candidates must be able to travel and be able to conduct fieldwork for long hours, in sometimes inclement weather conditions, often in rugged terrain and sometimes at high altitudes. Dependent on project travel being required, per diem is currently $39/day, hotel room accommodations and field vehicles are provided, and project travel time is paid.
