Southwest Archaeological Consultants is seeking two archaeologists to assist in supervising field work, including survey (Phase I), testing (Phase II) and excavation (Phase III), in northwest New Mexico. The positions, which begin 1.15.09, are on the staff of a cultural resources project that will continue for 2+ years. In addition to intensive field work, the positions entail intrasite and intersite data analysis, artifact analysis, and technical report preparation.
General Responsibilities:
Direct field crews of 4–6 individuals during survey, testing and excavation;
Prepare, review and compile field notes and line drawings (e.g., feature plans and profiles) and other forms of data relevant to documenting site excavations and preparing reports;
Prepare brief technical documents summarizing survey, testing and excavation results;
Site and artifact analyses, including data collection, database management, and report preparation.
At a minimum, qualified individuals must have a B.A. in Anthropology/Archaeology, 12+ months full-time excavation experience, 6+ months full-time site survey experience, and at least 12 of these 18 months of excavation and survey experience need to have been in the southwestern United States (Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico and Utah). In addition, qualified individuals should have previous experience as a crew chief and at least a modicum of experience preparing technical reports. An advanced understanding of ceramic and/or lithic technology and actual experience in undertaking artifact analyses is preferred but not necessary. Experience with surveying equipment (i.e., GPS units, total stations, transits) and a background in the Earth Sciences are advantages.
Potential applicants should consider the following: (1) Field work is scheduled to begin in January and continue into November of 2009, requiring a large amount of field time for supervisors; (2) given the scheduling, supervisors must be willing and able to work in the sometimes harsh field conditions characteristic of winter and early spring in the project area; (3) the project is dynamic and its priorities/objectives subject to change as our client's scheduling changes, and thus supervisors must be flexible, highly motivated, and able to work collegially with other staff members to coordinate and reconcile oftentimes conflicting field, lab and office needs; and (4) a large number of the sites to be investigated in 2009 are Archaic artifact scatters in eolian deposits, so a demonstrable interest in the Archaic (e.g., subsistence, land-use patterns, assemblage variability), artifact scatters (e.g., degree of isomorphism between surface and subsurface artifact distributions), or geoarchaeology (e.g., buried soils in dunes and sand sheets) is an advantage.
This is a permanent, full-time position requiring relocation to the Albuquerque/Santa Fe area. Salary and benefits will be based on experience and qualifications. For immediate consideration, please forward a cover letter, curriculum vitae, and references to Steven Mack at srmsouthwest@msn.com.
