Job Description

JOB SUMMARY: Sapphos Environmental, Inc., a growing environmental, planning, and resource management company located in Pasadena, is currently recruiting a mid-level archaeologist to join our expanding Cultural Resources Group. Under the supervision of the Cultural Resources Manager, this full-time, permanent position will entail fieldwork, archival research, site evaluation and recordation, preparation of technical reports, analysis of project impacts on archaeological resources, and mitigation monitoring.

KEY TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Assist in conducting Phase I and Phase II archaeological surveys and evaluations
• Participate in archaeological monitoring
• Conduct record searches at the Information Centers maintained by the California Office of Historic Preservation
• Develop and execute archaeological research designs
• Prepare site records, State of California Historic Resources Inventory forms, Cultural Resources Technical Reports, and Environmental Impact Report/Statement sections relating to archaeological resources
• Assist in coordination with the Office of Historic Preservation, Native American Heritage Commission, and Bureau of Land Management
• Assist in the preparation of proposals and the development of cultural resource investigation budgets and schedules

REQUIRED TECHNICAL SKILLS:

• Experience in California cultural resources management with a working command of federal and state cultural resources statutes
• Operational knowledge of the prehistory and history of California and the Southwest
• Experience in the inventory and evaluation of prehistoric and historic archaeological resources
• Background in paleontology not required but would be desirable
• Demonstrated writing and research abilities
• Ability to use computer hardware, software, and other related information technologies for extended periods on a daily basis
• Knowledge of GPS data collection equipment


OTHER SKILLS: The ideal candidate must be detail-oriented, have a professional demeanor and strong organizational skills, and possess the ability to manage priorities, meet deadlines, and multitask in a fast-paced environment. The candidate should be able to work in a team environment with a variety of project members and manage tasks as delegated by project lead. The candidate must possess strong communication skills, the ability to work closely with clients, and be able to supervise the work of others.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: The successful candidate will have a BA/BS degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, or closely related discipline (MA /MS is preferred), and will have a minimum of two years of field experience. Register of Professional Archaeologists (RPA) status is desirable. A record of professional research and publication will be favorably viewed.
