Northwest Archaeological Associates, Inc. is in search of a geologist with previous training who has completed an archaeological field school or an archaeologist with sufficient training in geology. Archaeological and geological field experience in Washington State is preferred. The job includes monitoring and logging geotechnical boreholes, monitoring geotechnical and archaeological trenches, drawing detailed profiles that include complete sediment and/or soil descriptions following USDA and USGS standards. Examples of the type of geological skills that are useful include sediment and soil descriptions, facies analysis, profile drawing, stratigraphic properties and core logging. Proficiency with GIS, and software like Adobe Illustrator and Rockworks is essential and writing skills are also important.
The varied work environment ranges from large scale construction sites to Phase III archaeological excavations across the Pacific NW, mainly in Washington State. Applicants should be willing to travel for up to 10 days at a time; however, a home base in Seattle for local projects is recommended. This is a year-long appointment with opportunities for special training, such as HAZWOPER. We are looking for someone to start as soon as possible, ideally by March 22.
The job entails between 30 and 40 hours a week of geoarchaeological fieldwork and analysis of collected data. Geoarchaeological work hours may be supplemented by more traditional archaeological tasks. Wages determined by level of experience with a minimum starting rate of $18.50 an hour. Benefits include health insurance, vacation, retirement, as well as room for growth if hired on a permanent basis, after a short probationary period.
