$5 million in grants to expand state, local historic preservation
03-05-08 - North America — , Pennsylvania
The National Trust for Historic Preservation is using a $5 million donation to boost support for its state and local partners nationwide.
"
The gift by the Robert W. Wilson Charitable Trust will fund resources to protect historic buildings and to better educating the public to prepare for natural disasters. Grants will range from $60,000 to $150,000 to two dozen organizations across the country. It\'s the largest amount the trust has ever put toward grants to state and local organizations.
Some programs slated to receive funding will target areas that haven\'t typically had access to preservation experts.
The nonprofit Preservation Maryland, for instance, was awarded $120,000 over three years to hire a full-time staffer for the state\'s mostly rural Eastern Shore. The Preservation Alliance for Greater Philadelphia is devoting its $150,000 grant to reach black neighborhoods, and the Los Angeles Conservancy will receive $140,000 to foster preservation in the Latino community.
