The Umpqua National Forest is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year, with the party kicking off this week in Glide.
"
Beginning Wednesday, an archaeological excavation will possibly unearth flake stone tools and similar artifacts at a Brown Street property in downtown Glide. The dig, which precedes the sale of property on the street, will conclude Saturday.
An Umpqua Basin Indians exhibit will be on display, featuring Native American tool replicas, art, hides and artifacts. A representative of the Cow Creek Band of Umpqua Tribe of Indians will explain the use of tools on display.
Also, in conjunction with the Glide Wildflower Show, the U.S. Forest Service will display on Saturday the History of the North Umpqua District in Glide exhibit, featuring archaeology and forestry. The display at the district office takes place from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
Also on display will be an old-time saw sharpening exhibit, complete with forestry tools, a fire-suppression station and a gold-panning kit, at the Colliding Rivers Visitor Center.
Forest Service retiree Jim Talbot will demonstrate the sharpening of a cross-cut saw.
The Bohemia Miners Association will host an interactive gold panning exhibit so visitors can learn how to pan and identify the precious metal. "
