Archaeologists have found the remains of a 200-year-old fort in south Georgia, the site of the last battle in the War of 1812.
"
After six months of excavation, researchers said they recovered evidence ranging from iron cooking kettles to musket balls proving the site was the fort at Point Peter, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.
More than 67,000 artifacts were found along a half-mile stretch of Point Peter Creek near St. Marys.
"Records of the fort and other structures at Point Peter are thought to have been destroyed when the British sacked Washington in 1812, so the physical evidence is really the only record that remains," said Scott Butler of Brockington and Associates, an archaeology firm.
The fort was built in 1776 on orders of Gen. George Washington and in 1815 was overrun by British troops slow to get word of the end of the 1812 war.
The fort remained in use by militias until 1821, when it was abandoned and fell into disrepair. "
