Volunteers Make a WWII Destroyer Ship-Shape

11-25-06 - North America —

Last week, the WWII-era "ship that wouldn't die" got a facelift from volunteers in the Hampton Hotels' Save-A-Landmark program.

" Docked in the harbor of Charleston, S.C., the USS Laffey, a National Historic Landmark, is open to the public as part of the Patriots Point Naval and Maritime Museum. The destroyer participated in D-Day and the Battle of Iwo Jima, where it was hit by five kamikazes in 80 minutes, earning its nickname. On Nov. 7 and 8, two dozen Hampton employees spent 75 hours painting and cleaning the destroyer, aided by Korean War veterans who had served on the ship. "We got a midnight tour of the place, and that was haunting because they'd show you where 14 guys got hit," says Chris Epting, spokesman for Hampton Inn's Hidden Landmarks program. "Everyone was extremely moved." Earlier this month, the National Trust for Historic Preservation gave a Preservation Honor Award to Hampton Hotels for its Save-A-Landmark program, which has refurbished 28 historic sites across the country since its inception six years ago. The USS Laffey was Hampton's first project in South Carolina. "There's a mission here to get at least one landmark in every state by 2010," Epting says, noting that readers can suggest sites on the program's Web site, www.hamptonlandmarks.com. "
