An area of Birmingham that includes roads and parks where civil rights marchers sang, prayed and were arrested, and buildings where blacks staged protests for equal treatment, has been placed on the National Register of Historic Places.
"
An application to register the Birmingham Civil Rights Historic District, which includes Kelly Ingram Park, Sixteenth Street Baptist Church, City Hall, parts of the Fourth Avenue business district, Third through Eighth avenues north, and 15th, 16th, 17th and 19th streets, was approved last month by the Interior Department. The designation marks an area where events of particular historical significance occurred from 1956 to 1963.
"This proves that Birmingham is the place where civil rights bloomed," said Marjorie White, director of the Birmingham Historical Society. "Where thousands of people took to the streets for freedom." "
