Historic Preservation News

Make history in your own backyard

01-23-07 - North America — , Florida

You call it home, but with preservation, future generations will call it a peek into the past.

" You don't have to drive to Connecticut or New York to see historic homes and neighborhoods. Central Florida cities are increasingly making it possible for residents to register and preserve older homes and districts before all are demolished, redeveloped or modernized in Florida's latest building boom. Historic designation does limit what owners can do to the structures on their property, but the limitations are designed to give citizens more input on the changes being planned in their neighborhoods. "Giving a district or property historic designation gives residents greater control over the way their city looks," says Winter Park City Commissioner Barbara DeVane. Each city in the region focuses its preservation efforts differently. For example: In Sanford, the emphasis has been on preserving the core of the city, which, until the coming of the railroads, was one of the most important centers of commerce in Florida. Sanford has designated a Historic Commercial District downtown that includes 26 properties, and a surrounding Historic Residential District that includes 434 sites. The City of DeLand enters its sites in the National Register of Historic Places, maintained by the National Park Service. Within the city's four historic districts, more than 600 sites have qualified for the National Register. "
