Old vessels and artifacts in and around the Wicomico River are revealing the history of the Eastern Shore for a Salisbury University archaeologist and undergraduate student.

Archeologist Stephen Bilicki and Jennifer Gardner, an archaeology major, started surveying the river at low tide in 2005 to find sunken boats. They're trying to understand why nine different ships have been found along a two-mile section of the river's shoreline.
Bilicki says the oldest one -- dating back to the Revolutionary War -- "is a glimpse into our maritime past." He said -- quote -- "We see all this developing going on and we are either covering up or pulling out wrecks that provide an idea of how our country developed.
