Want to be Part of History? Help Inventory Liberty's Historic Resources

02-08-07 - North America — , Kansas

If you have a penchant for history or are looking for a volunteer project, consider helping the City of Liberty update the official inventory of the City's historic resources.

" The city's Preservation Office is initiating this new community-wide effort to gather the information needed to ensure the wise use of the community's historic resources. Anyone interested in local history or historic architecture is encouraged to participate in the field survey process, which can be done by individuals or groups, at their own convenience, and no prior experience or knowledge is necessary. Updating the survey requires visually observing each individual property and noting any changes that have been made to the exterior over the past 20 years. Property owners are encouraged to contribute additional information for the survey, such as dates of significant alterations to the property, or when they first purchased the house. All such information contributes to the on-going history of each house and provides for a richer and more valuable resource. A training workshop will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 3 at the Corbin Theatre. Volunteers will be instructed on how to identify architectural styles, building materials, and recent alterations. Survey forms and other required materials will be provided. For more information, call the City's preservation planner at 792-6000, ext. 3036. This survey will update one that was completed in 1987. Information from this survey is still used today by the Historic District Review Commission when considering requests for certificates of appropriateness, by researchers at the Clay County Archives, and by property owners who want to find out more about their old houses. Copies of the survey are available to the public at the Clay County Archives and in the City's Preservation Office. "
